It was with Lou’s insistence that my mom move in with us in 1985. She was living alone at the time in the family home in Livermore. She told Lou that she went to play at 5:30 pm every night because she was afraid to be awake when it was dark. This got to Lou and on the way home to Concord, he threw out the idea in the car, “I think Mom should move in with us. We have the room.” That was it! I have to admit, I was a little bit apprehensive and I wondered how the kids would adjust. Joy was in high school, Jason and Jennifer in middle school. I don’t remember any apprehension on their part at all. Everyone adjusted immediately and a special kind of joy filled our home with her presence.

We were just completing the renovation to our home (we added two bedrooms, a bath, and a large family room). I am so lucky to have such a wonderful husband who adored his mother-in-law. The two of them had a special bond. They inspired each other. Mom thought Lou could do anything — carpentry, plumbing, painting…you name it, he could do it!

He loved to make her laugh and she loved to cook for him. Lou always included Mom in everything we did. He never complained about anything. She did everything with us … camping, 49er games, Las Vegas, Tahoe, Jason’s football games, the girls’ cheerleading competitions, dinner with friends, especially Don and Jude. It was the five of us for many outings. I am so proud that she felt comfortable and happy with us.
